Happy Friday We work with amazing tech leaders and managers from around the world.
This week our mentoring team have been on calls from Rio to London, Dubai to Melbourne. What’s interesting is that despite the geographical spread of our customers, many of the challenges being faced are remarkably consistent. The language of tech is truly global. One topic that came up this week was around courage in leadership, what it means to lead, having courage to do the right thing and take responsibility for decisions that will impact heavily on those around you. We’ve dug out some articles based around the same.Enjoy the read and have a wonderful weekend.Andrew Weaver

Courage in leadership: From the battlefield to the boardroomInteresting article from former military man, comparing courage in the battlefield with courage in the c-suite.“The battlefield may be a crucible for all manner of success in life.  Survive, and you’re likely agile, decisive, quick thinking and – above all, courageous. And that courage manifests itself not just in a firefight. As this Ivey PhD and battle-tested Canadian Forces officer writes, courage means much more than bravery. It means having the character traits that make you an effective leader on the battlefield – and in the C-Suite”______________________________________________________________________
When’s the last time you felt uncomfortable as a leader? Many of you subscribe with CTO Academy because you’re ambitious, driven, motivated and maybe, feeling occasionally uncomfortable? Those elements tend to go together because if you’re driving yourself to achieve the career you want and grappling with the conveyor belt of challenges that leadership brings, you will often find yourself being outside your comfort zone.As leadership can also bring a sense of isolation, that discomfort doesn’t always have an outlet. We’ve written before about tech leaders often feeling Lonely at the top. Here’s an article with The 4 (Often Uncomfortable) stages all new leaders and managers go through.__________________________________________________

Quote of the week“Do one thing every day that scares you.”“Courage is more exhilarating than fear and in the long run it is easier. We do not have to become heroes overnight. Just a step at a time, meeting each thing that comes up, seeing it is not as dreadful as it appeared, discovering we have the strength to stare it down.”– Eleanor Roosevelt
